Officers were called to the fishermen's huts near The Stade, Rock-a-Nore Road, around 6pm on Saturday (June 13) to reports of an assault, police said.

The 22-year-old victim had got into a minor disagreement with an unknown man, during which he was hit on the head with a long metal object, according to a police spokesman. He suffered a serious injury requiring hospital treatment.

The suspect is described as white, around 5ft 10in, bald and was wearing a white top and either blue or green shorts.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Ian Dearling said: "This was a nasty assault which resulted in the victim being hospitalised.

"It was a sunny afternoon and we know there were a number of people walking or driving past at the time of the assault.

"We are appealing to anyone who saw what happened to contact us. In particular, I would like to speak to a shirtless man who offered to help the victim while he was waiting for the ambulance."
