Councillor calls on police to get stricter over Pagham parking rules

Police have been urged to enforce parking rules around Pagham.

The area's county councillor, Mike Coleman, said the necessary legal restrictions were in place in parking troublespots along Pagham Road and The Parade.

But it was up to the police to get to grips with the situation by starting to issue tickets to law-breaking motorists.

Mr Coleman told Pagham Parish Council's latest meeting it was not good enough for the police to claim they had no reason to take action.

"I think it is a low-level issue for the police but it is a high-level one for residents.

"The county council is doing everything it is being asked to do to support the police, but the police have to do the enforcement. Until they do, people are not going to get the message about parking.

"Just because the yellow lines are faded, does not mean the police are not in a position to enforce them."

Mr Coleman said new double yellow lines had been put in outside the Inglenook Hotel along Pagham Road.

New parking restriction signs had also been requested to replace the faded ones along The Parade.

But he said the traffic regulation order, which imposed the parking restrictions, still applied regardless of the state of the signs.

Parish council chairman Ray Radmall said: "We will ask our police community support officer to attend a briefing with the council to make the point we are looking to him to enforce the county council's work."

Chris Braby, the parish council's clerk, said: "This parking concern is not a new issue.

"It's an ongoing one and it should not come as a surprise to the PCSO or anyone else."
