Cheerful sight greets visitors to Walberton rose show

A mass of colourful and cheerful roses ensured Walberton Horticultural Society's rose show lived up to its name.

Some outstanding exhibits of the flowers gained some well-deserved admiration from visitors.

The show is the smallest of the four which the society holds each year. But about 180 entries ensured there was plenty to delight those who went along.

A magnificent first-prize winner in the delphinium classes particularly caught the eye.

The exhibitors in the small but well- supported pot plant section also added to the colour of the event.

In the fruit section, several strawberry entries showed the skill of the exhibitors in overcoming May's weather.

Lettuces were also to the fore in the small vegetable section, while the floral art entries lived up to the tradition of producing some outstanding artistic and colourful entries.

Joan Jackson, the society's chairman, said it had been encouraging for the society to see some new exhibitors had entered the show and had also won trophies.

The one disappointing aspect of the event was the slightly lower than usual number of visitors.
