Charity's new minibus

YES, we love the new mini bus was the Valentine's Day reaction to a brand new vehicle purchased by Age Concern Heathfield and District.

The minibus, a 29,000 14-seater Peugeot will be in constant use, transporting nearly 600 older people each month to a variety of local venues.

The group has previously used a Ford minibus, bought second-hand in 1995, but this was overdue for replacement, having covered 110,000 miles. Successful fundraising made it possible to buy the new minibus.

Help the Aged, the Co-op Group, Heathfield and Waldron Community Association, two anonymous local residents and Mrs Doris Vine all contributed to the minibus fund. Further help came from the Inland Revenue, who allowed VAT exemption on the purchase.

Help the Aged provided significant funding for the new vehicle through its Senior Mobility Campaign, which provides grants to help community groups and projects across the UK meet their transport needs.

'We are very grateful to Help the Aged for its support. We have been operating our minibus for fourteen years, and it would not be too much to say that it has transformed the lives of a large number of older people, who would otherwise be isolated from normal daily living,' said Geoffrey Smith, Chairman of Age Concern Heathfield and District.

Help the Aged wants to increase the number of community projects and older people that it assists. Contact David Coeshall 020 7239 1834.
