Change at Bexhill post office

Changes will be made at Bexhill Post Office so that service is in line with modern need according to delivery office manager Paul Gander.

He told Bexhill Town Forum that the workforce in future would be organised to fit in with later delivery and sorting times, and would be made up of more part-time employees.

There are at present 80 members of staff at Bexhill, dealing with 22,000 delivery points, and covering the TN39 and TN40 postal areas.

There has been a significant drop in the number of letters sent off and received each day but at the same time a rise in the number of packets we send, thanks to internet ordering and ebay transactions.

Royal Mail has taken on board a number of changes as it attempts to modernise and deal with competitors in the market such as TNT and DHL but postal workers are already at a point where they are deciding to hold a ballot on whether or not to strike over new working practices and conditions of employment.

Postal workers are coming into work later than they used to, and have a 6am start, but the future will see part-timers working between 9-2pm which will be more in line with delivery time, he claimed on Tuesday evening.

He assured the Forum that no full-time employees would be expected to move to part-time work, and said: "I can assure you that you will still receive one delivery a day in Bexhill. You will receive a good service with collections in Bexhill."
