St. Laurence Church celebrated Pentecost/Whitsunday with a party. There were 30 guests of all ages. The weather was kind and fortunately the rumbling thunder stayed in the distance. Thomas Brassey opened the celebrations (looking very like the Rector) and invited us to go on an imaginary rail journey. We started at the birthday station, and travelled through various aspects of Pentecost and the Breath of Life. The Station Master moved us between stations with great precision, so we reached the last station exactly on time to light candles to place on a map of the world, as the Holy Spirit sent the Christians all over the world. Then on to the best ‘Buffet Car’ ever, with a supurb birthday cake for the church. A great time was had by all!

The June WI meeting was mostly about the fun ‘Flower and Produce Show’. Although the number of entries had decreased slightly, the quality of member’s entries seemed to have reached new heights and the judges had a very difficult task in deciding the winners. The meeting began with members singing ‘Jerusalem’, this time unaccompanied due to the absence of our pianist. The usual business matters were presented and the many events that are taking place over the summer months had members scribbling in their diaries.

The most immediate of these is the WI ‘Strawberry Teas’ afternoon on Saturday 21st June at 3pm – 5pm in the Village Hall. If you haven’t been to this event before, you’re in for a summer treat of home-made scones and jam with plenty of delicious local strawberries and fresh cream – a bargain at £4 for adults and £2 for children. There will be a cake stall too. The event is to raise funds for the Catsfield WI’s charity of the year, Demelza Hospice Care for Children.

After the business side of the meeting and whilst waiting for the judging of the show entries to be completed, there was a quiz in which everyone could take part. Two posters of faces of famous men of the 20th century had been put up in the hall and there was a prize for the team that managed to name all twenty faces correctly. We were able then to view all the competition exhibits and see who had won in the each of the classes. The overall winner was Ann Clegg.

Tomorrow (Saturday) is the Car Boot Sale on the Playing Field from 8.30 am – 11.30am to raise funds for the Parish Church of St Laurence. Hot and cold refreshments will be available (especially bacon butties!) The church will have a ‘boot’ of its own and any donated items to sell will be gratefully received. The charges will be cars £7, vans £10, browsers 50p so come and sell your unwanted items or grab a bargain.

The next fund raising event for the church will be a “Summer Concert” with Rother Community Choir, St Laurence Church Choir and Guest Artists. This will be on Friday 11th July 2014 at St Laurence Church, Catsfield starting at 7.30pm. Entry £6 and this includes light refreshments, tickets are on sale at Catsfield Village Stores. Those of you who attended the similar event held last year will remember what an excellent and thoroughly enjoyable evening out it was, with music to suit all tastes, so make a note of the date and get your tickets early.

The Catsfield History Group’s exhibition to commemorate ‘The Great War’ which was displayed in St Laurence’s Church until Wednesday, attracted a steady number of visitors throughout the week that it was open. The group must be congratulated on such an interesting insight into the contribution made by the 134 men from Catsfield who enlisted to serve their country, 21 of whom died in action. The History Group have been invited to set up their display at Claverham Community College in Battle, so that all the students can learn more about the history of WWl and how it affected this area.

Catsfield’s cricket team was beaten at home by 12 runs last Saturday in their match against Southbourne, with Derek Longley our highest scorer at 40 not out.

The East Sussex County Council’s Mobile Library will be making its fortnightly visit to Catsfield and will be parked in the usual place outside the Village Hall on Wednesday 18th June from 3.45pm – 4.45pm.
