Caretaker retires

CARETAKER Carl Anderson has said farewell to pupils at the Uckfield school where, shortly after starting work, he watched fire burn down a major part of the Victorian building and then liaised with contractors who rebuilt it

.

Mr Anderson spent six years working at St Philip's Roman Catholic Primary School and he brought much more than his cleaning and caretaking skills to the school.

One role was as a living resource in history lessons where he talked of his experiences as an evacuee during the Second World War.

Before joining St Philip's Mr Anderson worked at the Uckfield Community Technology College and had also spent many years in the printing industry.

Inspection

Problems in recruiting cleaning staff meant that Mr Anderson did the job at St Philip's single-handedly for a few years and at the last full school Ofsted inspection there was praise for the high standard of cleanliness achieved 'by just one man'.

He worked closely with the school's Friends Association and at one stage joined the governing body as staff governor, representing non-teaching staff.

A special assembly was held on Mr Anderson's last day at the school when gifts and cards were presented to him.

Headteacher Dr Steve Austin said: 'He will be missed by everyone in the school community and we all wish him well in what we hope will be a long and happy retirement.'
