Candlelit Vigil

MORE than 100 people braved freezing temperatures to join in a candlelit peace vigil at Littlehampton on Sunday evening.

The two-hour event, at the town's war memorial, took place 24 hours after up to two million people took part in the anti-war protest in London, and several of those attending the Littlehampton vigil had also been in the capital.

Derek Williams and Ann Sheppard, who organised the vigil, were pleased with the turn-out on such a cold evening.

Said Derek: "It was gratifying to join with such a cross-section of local people, from young children to age 93, who were willing to quietly express their concerns. From their written comments, those who attended were clearly opposed to any military action against Iraq being undertaken in their name."

As well as lighting candles, people taking part were invited to add their thoughts to a book of messages.

The Rt Rev John Hind, Bishop of Chichester, and groups from Littlehampton and Arundel attended the London march, while those travelling long distances to the capital included Hannah Green, an Angmering student at Manchester University.
