Businessmen 'conquer' Everest

Not content with their demanding day jobs, three businessmen from Sussex took part last month in an expedition to Everest and raised £15,000 for British Heart Foundation.

Worthing based Mike Jones of Michael Jones & Company Estate and Letting Agents, Jeremy Wootton, partner at law firm Thomas Eggar, and Chris Griffin from Duncton plc, were part of a group of 40 people from all over the country who undertook the strenuous trek to Everest Base Camp in the Himalayas.

The expedition was led by veteran mountaineer, Doug Scott, the first Briton to climb Everest in 1975.

Commenting on their gruelling challenge, the three businessmen said: "We would really like to thank everyone from the local and business communities who generously supported us.

"It was a truly life-changing experience which stretched us both physically and mentally.

"The scenery was out of this world but what we will always remember is the Sherpa people who live there.

"By our standards they have nothing and yet they are content with their lives.

"It brings it home to you just how much we take for granted."

The threesome survived for 14 days in sub-zero temperatures, which at their lowest point dropped to -16oC, on a diet of porridge, soup with popcorn, soya bread, black tea and yak's cheese.

Deprived of basic creature comforts, a two-person tent was their only means of shelter from the harsh elements.

Altitude sickness was one of the other ordeals they faced as they ascended to Base Camp 5300m high.
