Brand-new Bognor Regis WI seeks more members

Women are wanted to join the first new WI in Bognor Regis for decades.

The first meeting of the group will take place at 7.30pm on September 1 at the Hub community centre in Canada Grove.

All women are invited to go along to find out what the movement can offer them in 2009.

Melanie Careless, a WI adviser, said they would discover plenty to interest them.

"The WI offers all kinds of opportunities for all kinds of women," she said. "It is just as relevant today as it was when founded in 1915 and it's just as radical.

"We enable women to make a difference to their lives, their communities and the world by staging campaigns from stopping the closure of community hospitals to saving the honey bee."

Belonging to a WI also provided the opportunity to take up new interests, develop new skills and join groups for arts and crafts, theatre trips, sports and holidays, she stated.

The Bognor area has at least seven of the institutes located in the surrounding areas such as Pagham and Barnham. But the town centre has lacked one for many years.
