Bonfire season gets underway in Rye area

TWO family bonfires takes place at Icklesham and Winchelsea this weekend.

Although the celebrations are smaller than those at Battle and Rye there will be no shortage of atmosphere, with drummers, flaming torches and spectacular fireworks displays.

The Robin Hood Bonfire Society holds its even toonight (Friday) on the field next to the Robin Hood pub.

Several thousand people are expected to take part in the event, which raises money for local charities and good causes.

The bonfire will be lit at 7.45pm and there will be a procession around the fire-site before that.

Gates open at 6.30pm and there will be a barbecue and refreshments.

Saturday sees Bonfire Night in Winchelsea. The event will start in Castle Street at 7pm.

Leading the procession to the bonfire field this year will be the Winchelsea Bonfire Boyes’ own young drummers, accompanied by the Buckswood School Pipe Band.

The Guy will this year be escorted by guards in authentic period costume.

If you have wood for the bonfire, call 01797-225333 (but the Bonfire Boyes cannot take plastic, MDF or greenery). Wood will be collected in the morning.
