Bexhill's big day in £50,000 goal

The big day has finally arrived in Bexhill United's quest for a £50,000 cash windfall.

The football club has reached the final six in the Meridian (East) region of The People's Millions, a partnership between the Big Lottery Fund and ITV.

Bexhill will be up against Margate Sea Cadets today (Tuesday) and whoever gets the most votes will receive the five-figure sum of money.

A two-minute film of Bexhill's project will be shown on Meridian News from 6-6.30pm and voting will run from 9am-12midnight.

The voting telephone number is 08716 268854. Voting will be restricted to 10 per telephone.

If successful, Bexhill intend to spend most of the money on installing floodlights at The Polegrove, which is essential if the club is to reach Division One of the Sussex County League.

The rest of the money would be used to improve disabled access to the clubhouse, establish a youth club and put more staff through the FA Level 2 coaching qualification.

Tracy Aston, who submitted the initial application and then drew up the secondary project plan, said: "It's quite something to get to this stage and it's an opportunity we will never have again. It would be nice to put Bexhill on the footballing map."

Mrs Aston was also keen to stress how the whole community would benefit if the application is successful as The Polegrove is also used for football by youth club Glenco, which is associated with Bexhill United, Bexhill Town Youth and Bexhill United Ladies.
