The award identifies fish and chip outlets that serve the highest quality fish and chips following a thorough assessment of the premises, equipment, working practices, hygiene standards and management controls, along with the quality and taste of cooked fish and chips.

It follows hot on the heels of Athena, at Western Road, being certified as selling sustainable seafood by the Marine Stewardship Council.

All the fish served from Athena’s menu will now be quality MSC certified sustainable and fully traceable back to well-managed, MSC certified fisheries.

Athena is run by experienced fish and chip shop owner Nick Damurakis who is passionate about only serving the very best to his customers.

Nick returned to his hometown to set up the new business after working for his parents’ award-winning fish and chip shop for over 15 years.

He was keen that this new chippy offered customers transparency, quality ingredients and fish that was traceable and from certified sustainable fisheries. It was the desire to have a consistent supply of quality certified sustainable fish that led him to work towards getting MSC certification.

“I was inspired by the thought of not just taking from the sea with no consequences. I like the idea of a world in which we are responsible for our actions and help to maintain the stocks of fish forever. I believe the MSC certification shows we care about the provenance of our fish.

“The key benefit of certification for me is our customers knowing you are trying to be sustainable and caring for the environment.”

“Currently we have cod from T Quality, line caught haddock from Unique Seafoods and hake from Smales; all MSC, all frozen-at-sea. We would love to add MSC fresh plaice when or if it gets certified and would look at any other species with certification.”

George Clark from the Marine Stewardship Council, commented: “Nick is clearly a really driven businessmen. When he called and said we’re going for this I knew he’d be certified . The MSC ecolabel on a seafood product means that It’s fully traceable to a sustainable source.”
