The region has nearly three quarters more accidents than the UK average according to http://www.pacts.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/Dashboard2/Dashboard%20National%20Report%20-%20November%202015.pdf from the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (Pacts) and insurer Direct Line.

The Constituency Road Safety Dashboard report claimed the constituency is improving 13 per cent slower than the national rate.

Figures show that 55 per cent of casualties involve residents and 27 per cent of ‘injury crashes’ – collisions that cause injury – happen on its roads.

Reasons for the area’s high rate are not definitive but one possiblitity is that people drive faster in the countryside.

“The constituencies with the highest indices tend to be sparsely populated and rural in nature, probably reflecting the high speed impacts as vehicles travel at faster speeds on roads with fewer safety engineering measures to reduce inherent risks in the road network,” the report said.

The A21 was deemed the ‘highest risk road in the country’ by Highways England in September.
