Be wary of roadside scam

Sussex Police are warning residents of a new roadside scam by con artists.

There have been reports across the county of drivers and passengers, male and female, flagging motorists down and claiming to have run out of petrol.

The men then offer gold rings in exchange for cash to buy some petrol.

Several times members of the public have passed over their cash and then the rings are snatched back, with a promise of payment later by calling a number on a business card.

The behaviour of the group if refused money can be "very intimidating".

To date no registration numbers have been recorded, but the cars being used by the scammers have been a silver Mercedes and a black BMW.
