Battle Choral Society

THE choir reconvened for rehearsals on Monday January 7 after the Christmas break to the sad news that its recently retired secretary of 17 years, Shirley Wild, had suddenly collapsed and died. Shirley had just been appointed vice president.

Members were extremely shocked especially as it had been hoped that Shirley, along with Jean Thomson who retired as chairman at the same time, could enjoy many more years of singing with the choir.

They had both been responsible for so many things that enabled the choir to improve not only its membership but also the general organisation, coupled with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The most immediate thought was that the forthcoming Bach Mass in B Minor would be dedicated to Shirley’s memory.

We have now begun rehearsals of this mighty work and look forward to the hard work ahead that this powerful Mass requires. The concert will take place on Saturday May 18 at Christ Church St Leonards details to follow, but in the meantime the choir will sing at Shirley’s Memorial Service on Tuesday January 22.
