Arun council secures funding for fuel poverty

THE traditional winter chill could be a thing of the past for some homeowners in the area after Arun District Council secured much-needed funding to tackle fuel poverty.

A joint venture between Arun and other authorities in West Sussex has paid off, after the Department of Health granted the councils more than £600,000 to warm homes in the region.

The financial windfall will help fund the Warmer West Sussex programme, which will see around 550 households across Arun offered free visits from qualified energy assessors.

Energy experts will give advice to residents on getting the best energy deals, using heating controls effectively, keeping warm and saving energy inside the home.

West Sussex fuel poverty co-ordinator Michelle Cheeseman said: “There are a large number of people struggling to keep their homes warm and protect their families from the ill-effects of the cold this winter.

“I am delighted that West Sussex has been successful with the bid, and we will be working with local partners to ensure the programme reaches those most in need. A Warmer West Sussex visit could make all the difference.”

Up to £50 of free energy-saving kit is also set to be handed out including draught-proofing equipment, hot water cylinder jackets as well as energy monitors.

Michelle added: “Nobody should be suffering from the cold in their own home. This initiative will help prevent this, and real practical assistance as well as very useful advice will be given.”

The funding will also enable organisations like the British Red Cross and parish councils to purchase additional winter kits. In addition, West Sussex Fire and Rescue will be supported in delivering home fire safety checks.

In the coming weeks, letters will be delivered to eligible households with details on how to book a free home visit.
