Artists open their homes

The Hastings Hot Houses season sees dozens of painters, sculptors, photographers and other artists showcase their work across seven different Old Town venues.

And, in recent years, the event has become a popular date on the local art calendar, with people using it as both a chance to cast an eye over top local talent and an opportunity to snap up some original pieces in the run-up to Christmas.

This year the open gallery experience is taking place tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday, with galleries and studios opening their doors between 11am and 5pm.

One of the venues, 84 Croft Road, has collections from half a dozen artists. Sophie Cadogan (knitwear), Joy Funnell (jewellery), David Cadogan (paintings and photography), Barbara Powell-Jones (fabrics), Jon Mills (metalwork) and Tom Banks (paintings) will all be on hand to discuss their work.

As will Sarah Mazaioli (paintings and mono prints), Maria Mazaioli (sound installation) and Philip Cosham (ceramics and print) who can all be found at 35 Whitefriars Road.

Round the corner at Black Winkle another trio are displaying their work. Claire Fletcher (paintings), Paul Thomas (digital prints) and Peter Quinnell (collage), while Amy Madge (jewellery), Harry Adams (paintings) and June Griggs (knitwear) will be at 63 High Street.

Paul Thittichai (silversmith) and Matthew Batchelor (wooden jewellery) are at 62 George Street while 8a Courthouse Street has work from three different collectives – ompompon (graphic knitwear), Lucky Saddle (modern design) and Angels & Violets (homeware).

Last but not least, 21 Dudley Road has work from Jackie Summerfield (ceramics), Paddy Boyle (images of fruit), Jane Ruchman (silver and gold enamel), Carole Sheldrake (sculpture), Pat Bennet (monotype), Liz Padgham-Major (cushions) and Robert Staermose (acrylic and gouache).

Entry to all studios is free.
