Anti-nesting nets fatal for birds

LOCAL animal lovers' concerns that birds are getting trapped after entering holes in netting on the roof of Bexhill Town Hall and then dying slow deaths when they fail to struggle free have been brought to the council's attention.

Anonymous calls to the Observer claimed that at least two birds - believed to be pigeons - had been seen hanging dead in the netting, which because of its prominent location is visible to many passers-by, including children.

“It’s the most distressing sight,” said one caller. “No creature deserves to die like this.”

Netting is often used on municipal buildings, factories and railway stations to deter nesting by birds.

Rother District Council spokesman Dan Collins said: “The council is aware of this issue and, although we must protect visitors and staff from the health risks associated with the birds, we would not want the animals to suffer in any way.

“The holes in the netting, which have developed through natural wear and tear, will be addressed within the next few weeks.”
