Animal magic at sanctuary open day

MORE than 1,000 people - plus children - turned out to Barby Keel's Animal Sanctuary open day on Sunday.

Visitors to Freezelands Lane, Sidley, had the chance to mingle with the animals, take part in games for all the family and have their fortunes told by a clairvoyant.

Stalls included plants, produce, toys and bric-a-brac and bargain hunters had the chance to pick up items in the antique shop.

The highlight was the chance to bid for a jacket owned by Russ Conway, and other memorabilia, which Barby found when sorting through donations boxes at her charity shop.

However the fate of the jacket has yet to be decided '“ negotiations on where it will end up are still ongoing.

The event raised more than 8,000, including a donation from two girls named Natalie and Molly, who between them collected 61.

Barby said: "It was a lovely day, a really super day.

"People were more than generous '“ considering the credit crunch.

Barby would like to thank all her supporters and staff for their hard work, and also Corina, who lent Barby her field in Freezelands Lane free of charge for the event.

n Another piece of Russ Conway memorabilia has come to light '“ Barby has also come across a keyring which she thinks went with the pianist's Rolls Royce.
