In recent weeks, inmates have taken to capturing and cooking the creatures – which has caused outrage among prison staff at the jail.

In a letter to prisoners, Ford’s governor Sharon Williams said the killing of rabbits on the site was ‘unacceptable’ and that it caused ‘distress’ to members of staff and some other inmates.

She wrote: “There have been incidents of offenders killing rabbits to consume them. This practice is unacceptable. Pest control systems are the only means that will be utilised.”

The letter, which featured in a report by the Daily Mirror, also said: “The killing of rabbits by any other means causes distress to staff members and offenders and is inhumane.

“Any microwave used for cooking contraband will be removed.”

Other national news reports revealed the grounds around Ford Prison are being dug-up by an estimated 5,000 rabbits.
