Adam's Peru adventure

Bexhill man Adam Harmer is one of a trio of expert kayakers and explorers about to attempt the first descent of an undisclosed tributary of the Amazon through the jungles of Peru.

This is Adam's second trip to Peru.

Once a cub and scout in Ninfield, Adam, now 28, is an adventurer with many trekking, climbing and kayaking expeditions under his belt and numerous qualifications in several genres of outdoor sports.

He has been paddling for 14 years and in quite a few countries: England, Scotland, Wales, France, Slovenia, Norway, USA (California), Canada (BC), Peru, New Zealand and Kenya. He has also achieved the dreams of mountaineering in the Himalayas, jungle trekking in Borneo and parachuting in New Zealand.

He was featured in the BBC's 'Ultimate White Water' programme where he was shown teaching news presenter, Kate Silverton, to paddle.

This latest expedition is supported and sponsored by The Welsh Sports Council and Adam has now headed out to Peru with Jon 'Spike' Green and Pete Catterall.

Adam's mum Jennie Harmer told the Observer: "After crossing the Atacama Desert, by 4x4 and mule train, the plan was to run the Rio Cotahuasi as a warm up six day affair, but we have just heard that they managed it in three days! The rapids ranged from grade 3 to 5... from there the team, with help from Amazonas Explorer, will travel to the location for the first descent in the jungle. Details of the river are currently secret, but the river journey is around six days in length and the expedition will be purely unsupported from the 'get in' to the end.

"Spike, Pete and Adam all currently work at the UK's leading Outdoor Centre, Plas y Brenin in Snowdonia. Plas y Brenin is the National Mountain Centre and also leads the way with coach education and paddlesport.

"As part of their work all three of the team members currently submit interesting articles and regularly present numerous evening lectures and general interest talks. It is the team's vision to host a series of lectures and university talks on their return from Peru. Having already been interviewed by the ITV local news team in North Wales the team has also outlined a post trip interview with ITV and local newspapers as well as securing a post trip report in several national magazines."

Adam was a pupil at Ninfield C of E Primary School, Claverham Community College and Bexhill College before embarking on his Degree in Outdoor and Environment Education at Liverpool John Moores University. He began his interests in the outdoors as a cub and scout at Ninfield under the guidance of Peter Mann and John Gladstone. A family white water Raft trip in British Columbia, Canada, for his 16th birthday, confirmed his career path and ambitions and he is now a well respected canoe and kayak instructor in this country having achieved the BCU Level 5 Award.

Jennie, Adam's dad Alan and brother Ben are now used to hair-raising photographs arriving from anywhere in the world, and are able to keep up with Adam and news of his many exploits via his blog and links - for details email [email protected]
