A spectacularly different entertainment

PYROTECHNICS and a fusion of cinema and theatre combined with ear-splitting bass and beats to provide an explosive climax to the weekend's Jour de Fete festivities.

In scenes reminiscent of last year's Panoramic festival, crowds converged on the De La Warr Pavilion lawns for the 30-minute Sealed With A Loving Kiss (SWALK) spectacle as the sun set on Sunday evening.

Impossible to categorise, the genre-hopping show used a cocktail of media to tell the tale of a temptress who spots the man of her dreams and begins sending him love letters through a mysterious go-between.

Nick is alarmed by the unsolicited fan mail but his initial reaction eventually gives way to curiosity, and the strangers begin a correspondence revealing their inner-most secrets and desires.

The plot was nothing special and the supposed denouement - when the audience discovers that Carrie, the temptress, is in fact a slightly-deranged stalker who moves from man to man pulling the same trick - frankly predictable.

The plot, however, was secondary in what was undeniably a brilliantly-executed, thrilling and innovative piece of outdoor performance.

Set on a multi-level stage with a backdrop of film projections echoing the live action, the show was punctuated with trembling drum and bass music and breathtaking pyrotechnics as the plot unfolded.
