Canadian comedy talent coming to town

Preview: Dana Alexander, Stand Up Hastings, Venuu, George Street, Thursday, June 30, 7.30pm.

ONE of Canada’s most outspoken and hilarious women has upped sticks and heading for fame and fortune here in dear old Blighty.

And, luckily for us, the deliciously dry Dana Alexander is showing off her undoubted talent on stage in the Old Town.

Her comedic style is both refreshing and irreverent, drawing material from her diverse lifestyle, her gay friends and her crazy Jamaican family. Culture shock meets hilarity in her straight up stand up, with sets covering everything from family and culture to sex - all with a down-to-earth and world sensibility sprayed through a unique ability to see the insanity of every-day life.

Original, endearing and from the gut, she began her comedy career at the tender age of 18 and quickly became a regular fixture in Canadian comedy clubs, universities and festivals. She was voted in the Best Discoveries by Toronto’s Now Magazine in 2006 and has since been included in their Best Of issues three years in a row, easily making her one of Canada’s hottest emerging young comedians.

Another Canadian magazine, Sway, recently wrote: “In an industry dominated by men, Dana Alexander holds her own as the only black female professionally performing stand-up comedy in Canada.”

One to watch, she appears at Venuu with support.

Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8.30pm start and tickets are £7 and £5 concession.
