Nostalgia Spot - winter scene from 1963

Snow and ice arrived well and truly last week, but did not compare with the icy chills of Bexhill during winter 1962/3, according to Eric Beal.

Eric, who now lives in Eastbourne, sent this photograph of his uncle, Pip Williams, who as groundsman at the Polegrove was faced with the daunting task of clearing away mountains of solid snow.

Eric, 72, back then lived in Ninfield Road and describes that heavy winter as “horrendous”.

He said: “Uncle Pip used to prepare the cricket wicket and football pitch. It was his job to cut grass and lay it down - he was the groundsman.

“When we had that massive winter from 1962 to 1963 I have never seen so much snow - regardless to what we had just now.

“What happened in Bexhill was they piled all the snow on to the promenade and pushed it onto the beach just near the sailing club and that area.

“I am sure records show it was a really bad winter which went on for weeks and weeks and weeks. “The original snow that fell would not go because it was just so cold. It was all piled up - it really was a bad winter.

“When the snow melted it flooded the Polegrove.

“The picture shows my uncle pumping water out with that little pump - I don’t know how long it took him!”
