Young Eastbourne environmentalist is planning a Car Free Day

Tom Nevill, 17, is head of the movement in the town and last year helped close four roads to encourage people to use more environmentally-friendly methods of transport.

Mr Nevill said, “Following on from the success of Car Free Day, September 2020, the plans are progressing well for an even bigger and better event during September 2021.”

Car Free Day is set to be on September 22 this year and Mr Nevill believes there are a number of reasons to get involved.

Mr Nevill said, “Car Free Day is a global event, as many governments around the world recognise that there is a climate crisis and we must all act to preserve a future fit for our children and grandchildren to live in. “Locally, the Eastbourne Borough Council, with cross-party support, aims for the town to be carbon neutral by 2030.

“Town and city centres are notorious for heavy traffic congestion and pollution, with the South East of England being particularly bad.

“A day free from cars would have so many positives, from clean air, less congestion, increased personal health and wealth.

“In 2021 we hope to close even more roads than we did in 2020, continue to work with local schools and businesses as we strive to make Car Free Day an event that puts Eastbourne on the low carbon map.”
