Home tuition on offer for pre-computer generation

Computer beginners baffled by internet, emails and files can get help learning the basics from a Broadbridge Heath-based IT trainer.

Ivor Tarrant, who also runs DG Studios based in Old Wickhurst Lane, has belonged to Silver Training since October 2012, which recruits, trains, and appoints people to provide unique one-to-one training in people’s own homes.

He also has an extensive background in computing having run his own software company for 20 years.

“It’s targeted to the older generation and you do it on a one to one basis, going out to people and chat to them,” he said.

“It’s pitched to the retired market using computing for the first time, and people who have no confidence in what they are trying to do.”

Training can be tailored to each client, going at their speed and dealing with their problems or issues.

“Usually people just want to try and understand the computer rather than it being threatening,” he added.

“They appreciate we are talking to them on their computers. It’s a refreshing approach.”

Two of his clients, Wendy and George Shankster, a retired couple who live in Mannings Heath’s Swallowfield Close, upgraded to an Apple Mac laptop and struggled to get to grips with a new operating system.

Wendy said: “We moved with the times and got the most difficult one.

“After about a month we thought: ‘what have we done’ and it was hard work, as we would find something and then the next day we could not find it again.”

She added: “We are learning a lot and hoping to understand it all. Computers seem illogical to us so we can’t understand them. It’s a different language.”
