Drivers set for another month of traffic chaos at Horsham’s Albion Way

The works have left traffic gridlocked in Albion Way this week, with vehicles queueing for more than half an hour in both directions.

Changes to the traffic light system in the Bishopric are being undertaken by the developers of the new John Lewis and Waitrose stores as part of conditions attached to the planning permission.

A spokesperson for West Sussex County Council said: “We appreciate the delays have been causing problems around this area and we will seek to ensure that traffic management is as efficient as possible.

“When planning permission was granted there were conditions attached which required the developer to make improvements to the highway infrastructure.

“This included creating site access, resurfacing Albion Way and upgrading the existing signal controlled junction.

“The upgrade of the signals will improve pedestrian access between the town centre and the new store.

“The site entrance works and part of the resurfacing was undertaken first. But, to avoid delaying the opening of the store it was agreed that phase two of the works would happen after opening.

“Due to the location and nature of the works, and the fact that this is a new store, it is inevitable that delays will occur and we want to apologise to people for any inconvenience and delays and thank them for their patience.”
