Pine pulling on the Warren

TWELVE Sandgate conservationistsAll helping on the Warren.They came from here and roundabout;One turned up in a sporran!And happily their help they gave.Hard toil was never foreign.

They lifted pine seeds from the heath,

Pausing for tea and bread

And as they stooped to the plants below,

It poured from overhead.

Vic and his volunteers worked on;

They didn't stop '“ 'nuff said!

Out came the birch, the pine and gorse

That cast remorseless shade,

To give the bell and ling a chance

Of growth in sunlit glade

And help the heathland creatures thrive,

Returning those who've strayed.

The sun shone over a purple sea

Of heather wet with rain

And the bonfire sizzled merrily,

Making everyone smile again.

"Come on my friends '“ just an acre more,

Aren't you glad you came!"

Yes we are, we're very glad.

It's better than jogging a mile

And it keeps us fit and healthy,

Doing something so worthwhile;

But where are YOU on our Field Days?

Come join us, that's the style.
