Little Common Horticultural Society - May 23

"RAISE the canopy, dig in plenty of compost and get planting".

This was the message we received from Julie Hollobone when she came to talk to us on Plants for a Shady Spot. Don't always think flowers, plenty of interest in shapes and colours can be gained from the different foliage plants. Also don't only plant ground cover but use clump forming plants. We were advised about plants not only for under-planting but climbers for walls and corners where the sun did not reach. If you think carefully there is a good variety of plants you can use.

Notices given out reminded us that plants are needed for the Village Country Fair to be held at the Wheatsheaf on Saturday, May 24. Please help. Plants can be brought along from 4pm until the Fair is open at 5.30pm.

Let's hope we are blessed with good weather!

Our June speaker will be Nick Robinson whose subject is Gardening for Wildlife. Let's hope he can advise on managing badgers. Before that is the next coffee morning on Thursday, June 12 so please look out those books and bric-a-brac, bake those cakes and get ready some more plants for the stall. Remember the money raised at coffee mornings helps to avoid an increase in subscriptions.
