Hitting the big time with band from smalltime TV

FATSO, The Rutles, Rutland Weekend Television, Monty Python and The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band . . .Neil Innes has done it all in a glittering career that he revisits this autumn on tour to mark the 30th anniversary of his band Fatso.

They were part of Innes's Rutland Weekend Television series, his tongue-in-cheek evocation of just what the country's smallest county would produce if it had its very own TV channel '“ a correspondingly small channel.

It was from that show that The Rutles emerged '“ Innes's now legendary Beatles spoof.

They began life as a skit involving speeded-up film a la A Hard Day's Night, and from that came the film All You Need Is Cash.

"Of all the Beatles, George Harrison was really up for it," Innes recalls. And for a good reason.
