History lesson with a twist at Littlehampton Museum

SHIELDS, swords and the active imagination of crafty children in Littlehampton all combined to create a fun-filled day of adventure.

Youngsters were thrown back in time to the gruesome battles and blood-fuelled wars of the Greek empire, last Wednesday (August 1), during the latest Get Crafty! session at Littlehampton Museum, in Church Street.

More than 30 children attended the afternoon workshop and created their own armour and weapons, in preparation for some heart-pounding sword fights – albeit with cardboard blades – along the museum’s corridors.

During the day, the junior historians were taught some interesting facts about the Greek culture, which helped to inspire them to create other artefacts.

The children also learnt a thing or two about the origins of the Greek democratic system, too. As the museum’s curator. Juliet Nye, explained, the crafty kids took away a great deal of knowledge from the event that they are already looking forward to putting into practice when they return to school, next month.

She said: “A fun mix of Greek wordplay followed by Greek swordplay was enjoyed by all, and the kids loved creating their own Greek soldier kit.

“They took part in some Greek warfare and learnt all about the history of ancient Greece – particularly about democracy and the voting system.

“The kids all said they learnt a great deal and a lot of them will be studying the Greeks at school next year.”
