Muddled thinking over grammar schools

What annoys me most is the argument that a grammar school is for the “privileged pupils” and that you have to have money to go to this type of school.

I believe that we are getting mixed up with the types of schools, either private or fee-paying, whereas my concept of a grammar school from past experience is that pupils had to show they could achieve the standards of education to get into the grammar school with an 11-plus. Ultimately, the argument is that you cannot lump every pupil into a level standard. The same can be said of university entrance, where you need certain grades or subjects, although there are fees to be considered as well.

When I was trained as a lecturer and instructor, we were told to provide a balanced teaching format so that all in the class benefitted. In reality the teaching profession should be more forthcoming that they may be held back by those who need more attention in bringing their standards of education up, whilst others in the same class are either working hard and feel as if they are being ignored or just left to their own devices. We do need to review our standards and come back to earth, allowing those who can get ahead to go to a grammar school and others to receive more teaching.

Society must realise that we cannot “equalise” everyone because everyone has different abilities. What worked before must be considered.
