The value of the £22m revitalisation of Chichester Festival Theatre was never better demonstrated than with this magnificent revival of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece.
The restructuring of the stage meant an entire orchestra could be located directly beneath it.
The combination of some of Tchaikovsky’s greatest romantic composition under conductor Igor Shavruk located directly beneath the feet of a sublime group of dancing artists brought a new magic to Chichester.
Moscow City Ballet tours extensively and are never afraid to use colour and choreography that brings its tales vividly alive, especially to younger audiences less familiar with the magic of ballet.
This production of The Sleeping Beauty was as good as anything Chichester could hope to see with stunning performances from Liliya Orekhova as Princess Aurora, Talgat Kozhabaev as the Prince, and Irina Adilova as the Fairy of Goodness.
Ballet is an art that uplifts and encourages especially in the depths of a dark, wet winter.
Expensive to stage Chichester is to be applauded for bringing ballet of this quality to the city.
