New season starts for Bognor Regis Music Club

Bognor Regis Music Club launches into its 38th season this month.

Chinese performer Wen Wen, sopranos Stephanie Peat and Rebecca Grove and the Arthur Catt Jazz Quintet are among the performers coming up in the weeks ahead.

The season gets underway at 7pm on Saturday, September 19, with the Club’s AGM, followed by a concert, which is completely free of charge.

Chairman Chris Coote said: “Ever since its formation in 1977 the club has held around 20 concerts every season, some given by professional artists and others by club members and their contacts. Past performers at the club have included Tasmin Little, Emma Johnson, Mark Padmore, Piers Lane, Clifford Benson, Jack Brymer, Nicholas Daniel and Levon Chilingirian.”

Chris added: “I am looking forward to the new season at the club, our aim being to make chamber and vocal music in a variety of styles available to as many people as possible in the delightful and intimate setting of the Bognor club. Admission prices for our professional concerts are £9 for members and £11 for visitors which we believe offers fantastic value for money. Concerts organised by club members cost only £6 (£8 for visitors). There is no need to book tickets in advance, just turn up on the night.

“We have two members’ evenings this year which allow any club member the opportunity to perform, and these are extremely popular as we discover previously-unknown talents.”

Concerts between now and December are:

n September 19 – Following the Club’s AGM, which will be short and informal, there will be a programme organised by club member Alex Palmer, featuring performances by sopranos Stephanie Peat and Rebecca Grove, violinist Martin Cannings, violist Joan Greenlees, cellist Raymond Greenlees, flautist Bridgette Knight and oboist Wendy Carpenter. Piano accompaniment will be by Jan Lewis, Margaret Lloyd and Rex Latter

n October 3 – A violin and erhu recital by Chinese artist Wen Wen, accompanied by Romanian pianist Mina Beldimanescu. Both studied at the Royal Academy of Music, and will be playing a programme of Beethoven, Smetana, Elgar and Poulenc, as well as a piece for erhu and piano by Liu Tianhua

n October 17– The club’s annual jazz event, always a popular concert with members, given this year by the local Arthur Catt Jazz Quintet. They will be playing a wide selection of favourite jazz standards

n October 31– Geoffrey Porter, former member of the club, will be presenting an evening of Sullivan without Gilbert.

n November 14– An evening with Chris Coote, who will be bringing his musical contacts to perform for the club.

n November 28 – A members’ musical evening, organised by club member Rex Latter.

In 2016 there will be concerts given by soprano Raphaela Papadakis, the Martinu Piano Trio from the Czech Republic, pianist Atsuko Kawakami and cellist Christine Draycott. Details from Chris (01243 773276) or Helen Woods (01243 861620) or
