The return of sport is vital to the well being of the local population and bowls has a big role to play.

Bowls England-affiliated clubs from Littlehampton to Southwick will be scrutinising the detailed support provided to enable them to open safely and adapt through the summer.

Last summer, local clubs played friendlies only – but it is anticipated there will now be a return to the West Sussex League where Tarring Priory, Worthing Pavilion, Worthing and Goring Manor compete in division one and Marine Gardens in ddivision three. The Stracey Shield and Brodie Tray will be back.

Individual bowlers will take part in county and national competitions and their own club competitions.

Worthing and Adur Council has worked closely with clubs over the past year and an annual service level agreement has been produced to ensure the greens used by Tarring Priory, Worthing, Lancing, Shoreham, Southwick and Southwick Park are well maintained.

Homefield Park was unable to survive the pandemic and Beach House Park will be reduced to two playable greens.

Over the spring bank holiday, the Bowls Big Weekend is a national initiative enabling clubs to promote the sport.

Tarring Priory is running taster sessions on Friday, May 28, Saturday 29 and Sunday 30. All you need to bring is a sense of humour and flat-soled shoes or trainers. All are welcome.

Recruitment officer Kevin Tester described the sport as a perfect mix of skill, outdoor exercise, fun, competition and friendship.

He said: “We have players who have competed for Sussex in national finals to those who simply enjoy a non-competitive game with friends and family.” See
