Bognor runners notch 2,145 5k runs in a year

A year ago when the UK lockdown was first announced, everyone was asked to stay at home.

This meant Bognor’s Tone Zone Runners were unable to meet and run together, parkrun was cancelled and races were also called off. This left a lot of people wondering what they’d do to keep themselves motivated to try to go out and run.

The club have organised quite a few activities and challenges for their members to keep the club spirit alive and give them a reason to turn the doorknob and get out for a run.

One of the main successes was a weekly virtual 5k branded the BRTZR Covid-19 Weekly 5k, which allowed members the chance to run a 5k from Monday to Sunday and submit their times.

These times would be collated and posted on the club’s group page for everyone to spur each other on. If you achieved a personal best on the spreadsheet it would be labelled as a Covid-19 PB and each runner could see their average time as an added motivation to see if they could nudge it down.

The Weekly 5k started by Jack Penfold in 2020 has now been going for a year with 152 individual members submitting their times.

Over the year a total of 2,145 times have been submitted with a collective time of 1,048 hours and 55 minutes and a creditable average time of 29min 21sec throughout the whole club.

Over the course of the year club members not only improved their Covid-19 PBs but with the help of other challenges and speed work being set, people achieved lifetime personal bests.

Notable mentions go to Donna Strowger, James Savage, Sarah Spurr, Sharon Rowe and Tony Hancock for their 100 per cent record over the 52 weeks.

Until parkrun returns the challenge will remain in place for club members to use it as some motivation to get out the door.
