'Woodside won't be the same without him' - tributes paid to Worthing FC fan and stalwart

Tributes have been paid to Worthing Football Club stalwart and fan Roger Johnson, who died this week.

Worthing tweeted the news on their official account and said: "A sad day as we hear the passing of one of our own, Roger Johnson. Roger was always a great support, not just as a fan, but dedicating his time to many roles at the club over the years. Our thoughts are with Rogers family & friends, he will be sorely missed here at Woodside."

And people who knew Roger and the club were saddened by news.

David Bauckham replied: "Absolutely shocked and numb at this news. I last spoke to Roger at @SFC_TheWickers first match back in Sept. Typical of him to turn out to support another Sussex club. Loved chatting to him about music & much more. A lovely man who gave so much to Worthing & the Supporters Assoc."

Peacehaven Wild Kids said: "Another big loss to the non league family."

Simon McMenemy also replied: "So sorry to hear of his passing. Was always behind the team and continued to follow me on my own journey... Will not be forgotten."

Si Hilton said: "RIP Roger. A true gent, always had time for a chat during my time watching the rebels."

Worthing owner George Dowell also paid tribute. He said: "I first knew Roger as a young @WorthingFC fan, buying curry pot noodles from ‘Rogers Tea Hut’. I then met him when I signed for the club & he was the U18 Club Sec, and got to know him well over the last 5yrs A truly sad day, Woodside won’t be the same without you Roger."

The AwayBoys Fanatics Worthing FC echoed the views that Roger did so much for the Woodside Road club. They tweeted: "Devastating news, this morning the club and community lost one of the best. Roger Johnson, a Rebel through and through who dedicated so much to WFC, a former chairman of the WFCSA to running the old tea hut, programme editor, you name it Roger done it and most recently involved with the youth set at the club.

"To top everything he was a home and away fan for longer than most will remember. The ABF wish to send our condolences to his family and friends, Woodside won't be the same without him. RIP Roger."

Former Worthing striker Ben Pope said: "Terrible news, a really great guy! RIP Roger."

Worthing FC Supporters Association also tweeted, saying: "Sad news today. RIP Roger Johnson. The club and community has lost a good one. Thanks for everything you did for the WFCSA over the years. You shall be missed."
