Delight for Drew as he lands Littlehampton golf crown
It was club championship week at Littlehampton Golf Club - and there were some stand-out performances.
Kicking off with the seniors’ section George Clark’s two-round gross total of 157 was good enough to make him seniors’ champion for 2020. Graham Youd on 158 and Paul Gaylor 159 were also in the hunt, but had to settle for a place instead.
The junior champion for 2020 is William Ashby-Skyrme, whose 36 points off 16 handicap sealed the deal from Noah Downs.
Joanne Otway (3) ran away from the field in the ladies’ championship. A three-under-par 70 in a second round containing no fewer than six birdies produced a winning margin of an incredible 24 shots.
In the Club Championship, played in early autumn, as opposed to mid-summer, day one saw two players post level-par 70s, Glenn Bunting and Dean Hendry in testing, blustery conditions and with pin positions well worthy of a championship. Two players were one shot back, so everything was set up for an exciting second day.
Drew Sykes (centre in pic) with a first-day 71, playing in the final group, belied his tender age of just 14 with a magnificent second round of 65 to take the championship by seven shots.
The highlight was a hole in one on the eighth, his first ace and a feat that hadn’t been achieved by any of the three-generation golfing Sykes family.
His brother, Joe Sykes (left of pic), and Glenn Bunting were second and third respectively, both carding two round totals of 143. In the President’s Cup nett competition, Harry Page (right) with an amazing nett 59 on day two won by five shots.
