When I, along with many others, attended the glitzy and well managed community consultations for the the North Littlehampton plan a few years ago, we were told that the planned housing (starting at 1,200 homes, with a possible 2,000 eventually) could only go ahead if a super new road infrastructure came into being, specifically, the Lyminster bypass road, which was a key element to all of these plans.
This road we were told was a pre-requisite for this brave new world of a plan for North Littlehampton.
Then we, and our local councillors, are stunned to hear that due to sewerage difficulties, the required number of homes can’t now be built that will allow the southern section of the Lyminster bypass to now be built any time soon.
But wait, what do I see when I am in Toddington – scores of houses now being built.
No relief road of course and the result of this? Slow moving and snarled up traffic on existing congested roads. Many road users cannot cope with the snail pace traffic. Add into the mix the 400 homes at Kingley Gate and of course the existing homes going up apace in Toddington – with no enhanced road to service this massive expansion of the town.
The result of all of this is yet more gridlock and frustration for road users.
The strategic authority and the planning authority – West Sussex County Council and Arun District Council – must make sure that half cocked ill thought through developments like North Littlehampton don’t happen.
Sadly, it looks like we have yet more over development with the required (and essential) infrastructure lagging woefully behind.
Yours, in the slow lane yet again,
