For some time now I have been most concerned about the lack of dropping off space at Worthing Pavilion, particularly for disabled people.
However, the situation became even more worrying when I and two friends went to the show on Saturday evening, taking a taxi as the weather was so bad.
The taxi driver commented on the fact that there was nowhere near the entrance to drop us off and said he would stop by the bus shelter opposite The Denton and would pick us up there later.
However, my friend who has Parkinson’s Disease, was sitting in the front seat and began to struggle out of the door.
Fortunately he was being very slow, because suddenly a large black vehicle came rushing past us on the inside, which meant that the driver must have mounted the pavement further back. If my friend had been any quicker he would most certainly have been knocked down and probably killed.
I really feel that something needs to be done about this ridiculous lack of consideration for the public. I was born in Worthing and have lived in the area all my life, and it was always possible in the past to stop at the front of the theatre for a few minutes. I assume someone in their “wisdom” at the Town Hall felt it was a good idea to block off the access, but after our frightening experience on Saturday, I feel that they should think again.
I will be interested to hear what your readers think about this subject, and whether we should start a campaign to lobby the council to do something about it.
