Walking through the Montague Centre recently, I was pleased to see that the threatened trees had not been felled yet.
Can we hope that the so-called ‘initiative’ could extend even now to persuade developers with some deal or even pressure that any one or more of the empty premises might be more suitable for these schemes rather than the destruction of a real and constructive amenity?
In any case I cannot believe that a proliferation of coffee/cake establishments will contribute much to the illusionary notion of excited throngs of visitors in the evenings when a number of these shops seem reluctant to stay open to serve them.
