I was pleased to read that the Worthing Herald has launched its ‘Get Trains Running’ campaign to strip Govia of its Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express franchises.
This is welcome support for long-suffering passengers and their families from their community newspaper.
To rub salt in the wound, on August 16, the government will announce yet another hike in our rail fares, for services which are usually late, overcrowded and under-staffed.
Passengers and taxpayers are being asked to pay an ever-increasing price for the failures of rail privatisation.
While fares keep rising, cuts to services and staffing are taking place. We are seeing the utter madness of ticket offices closing, essential guards removed from trains, the extension of driver-only operations and fewer staff at stations to provide help when we need it.
We’re paying more, but getting less.
It’s time to say ‘no more’. We demand a rail service run in the interests of passengers. We support the staff and rail unions in their industrial action to try to make Southern Rail see sense and put safety before profits.
Worthing District Trades Council is organising a protest event held over two sessions on Tuesday, August 16, as part of a national day of ‘Action For Rail’. We warmly invite your readers to join us at Worthing Central Railway station, from 7.30am to 9am and/or 5pm to 7pm.
