Cllr Philippa Bower says “some facts are inarguable”, and then goes on to repeat the myth that “EU laws are made and passed by unelected officials”.
They are not. Draft laws are proposed by the European Commission, made up of commissioners appointed by each national government, including the UK. They are then debated in the European Parliament, made up of political groups (Conservative, Socialist, Liberal, Green, and various nationalists) elected by universal suffrage across each member state, and either passed, amended or rejected. The Council of Ministers, made up of elected ministers from each national government (again including the UK), can also take decisions. All are subject to scrutiny in Westminster by Select Committees of the House of Commons and the Lords.
She then states that “Europe is a shrinking market”. It is in fact the largest internal market in the world, tariff-free for nearly 600 million people, and some 60 per cent of UK trade is with the EU. London is the financial capital of Europe, and vital to our prosperity.
Some facts may be uncomfortable truths to Brexiters, but repeating myths does not alter them.
