West Sussex bucks trend over closing libraries

The BBC, using a Freedom of Information request, has discovered a worrying trend of libraries closing and jobs being cut in the UK.

However, in West Sussex the report says that since 2010 no libraries and/or mobile libraries have closed.

There has been a reduction in jobs, though.

The report adds that in 2010 there were 283.7 paid staff in libraries, compared with 231.2 now.

The council had 274 unpaid volunteers in 2010 and has 994 volunteers today.

The overall picture in the UK has been described as the greatest crisis in the library service’s history.

Over in East Sussex since 2010 four libraries and/or mobile libraries have closed.

In 2010 there were 170.1 paid staff in libraries, compared with 133.3 now.

The council had 344 unpaid volunteers in 2010 and has 372 volunteers today.
