The voices of more than 20,000 young people across West Sussex have been heard in the UK’s largest youth consultation.
‘Make Your Mark’ is a national survey which gives young people the chance to decide what the UK Youth Parliament debates.
The West Sussex Youth Cabinet and UK Youth Parliament worked with the county council’s Young People’s Service and 45 schools, colleges and youth groups to find out what matters to local young people.
Stephen Gearing, 13, a Member of Youth Parliament, said: “A big thank you to everyone who voted and to the schools and clubs who made time in their already busy lives to participate in this important ballot.
“Without the support of these schools and clubs the youth voice of West Sussex would not be heard so loudly.”
Almost a million children from every corner of the country had their say, and the top five issues that were chosen by the Youth Parliament were the living wage, a curriculum for life, transport, mental health and tackling racism and discrimination.
Peter Evans, WSCC’s cabinet member for children – start of life, said: “It is vitally important that young people can have their voices heard.
“To have more than 20,000 young people vote on issues that concern them shows great teamwork from the West Sussex Youth Cabinet and UK Youth Parliament and how important it is to listen to our young people.”
