The road will be closed to traffic and cyclists from mid-May until the end of September, between the Mussel Row restaurant and the former Nelson pub.

The decision has been made to allow pedestrians to safely navigate their way around queues without worrying about traffic and to allow social distancing.

If the coronavirus restrictions are lifted in June as planned, Littlehampton Town Council will provide entertainment such as magicians or balloon artists at the popular spot but keep it low-key so not to encourage huge crowds to gather in one place.

People with mobility issues can be dropped off on Clifton Road or South Terrace where Blue Badge holders can park in accordance with Blue Badge parking rules.

Karl Roberts, director of place at Arun District Council, said: “Last year, Pier Road was closed to vehicles as a safety measure to protect the public from the possibility of contracting Covid-19 and the risk posed by traffic while trying to socially distance, and we are doing the same this year as these risks continue to exist.

“We believe this will allow Pier Road shops, cafes and restaurants to enjoy a busy summer of trading, balanced with our duty of care to the community to keep people safe.”
