Lorry driver's drug-driving arrest after cyclist crash

A Littlehampton man has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after his lorry collided with a cyclist.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which occured just after 1pm on Saturday at the junction of the A270 Lewes Road and Elm Grove in Brighton.

The cyclist, a 27-year-old man from Brighton, riding a red Cannondale, sustained serious and potentially life-threatening injuries.

He was taken by ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, where he has been detained for treatment. He remains in a serious condition.

The lorry driver, a 47-year-old man from Littlehampton, driving a red Volvo tipper truck, was unhurt. He was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving while under the influence of drugs. He was later released on bail until 7 September pending further enquiries.

Police want to hear from anyone who saw what happened, or who in particular may have closed circuit television or dash cam footage showing the collision, to email [email protected] or phone 101, quoting Operation Hartfoft.
