Fifty metre crop field destroyed by fire

A 50 metre area of a field home to standing crops has been destroyed by a blaze this afternoon (Friday July 22), the fire service has said.

Firefighters were called to the incident off Tack Lee Road, in Yapton, at about 4.50pm.

The fire service said a 50 metre by 10 metre area of the field was well alight when crews arrived.

The flames were extinguished using hose reels, portable backpacks and fire beaters.

Three crews from Chichester, Littlehampton and Bognor attended the blaze.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “Crews remained there for quite some time dampening down and turning the field.”

They have since left the scene.
