The Worthing Observation Wheel (WOW) has proven to be hugely popular since being introduced several years ago, with more than 50,000 people taking rides according to Worthing Borough Council.

Working with operator deKoning Leisure, the council has this year decided to go with a smaller, 33m wheel between The Beacon and the Beach Office at the bottom of Montague Place.

Previous iterations of the WOW have stood at 46m in height.

The new model is built with no enclosed carriages, unlike the previous models which had fully contained pods.

Open carriages will allow sea breezes to provide plenty of ventilation, the council said, to help limit the spread of Covid-19.

There will also be plenty of hand sanitiser stations, enhanced cleaning and staff have been given extra training on Covid-safe protocols.

A spokesman for Worthing Borough Council said: “We are delighted to have the WOW back on the seafront. We are sure this new model will be as popular as the previous structure although there are some days an extra layer of clothing might be in order.

“On balance we were happy to go with the open air ride so visitors will not only get spectacular views but extra fresh salty sea air and for no extra cost!”

Details of booking and costs will emerge in the next few weeks with construction of the attraction, similar to the hugely successful ride that was installed in Steyne Gardens in 2018, likely to begin as early as this week.
